Special Education (PK-12) Graduate Certificate - Add-on Certification

Temple University's Graduate Certificate in Special Education offers a non-degree, practice-oriented pathway for educators seeking Pennsylvania teacher certification in Special Education (PreK–12). This certificate is specifically designed for currently certified teachers in other content areas (e.g., elementary, secondary) who want to expand their credentials to serve students with disabilities in inclusive and specialized settings. Individuals seeking initial teacher certification in Special Education (PreK–12) should explore the MEd in Special Education or the Non-degree Teacher Certification in Special Education

Grounded in evidence-based practices and inclusive pedagogies, the program focuses on the design and implementation of individualized supports, proactive classroom strategies and collaborative instruction for students with diverse learning needs. It emphasizes preventative, strengths-based approaches that promote equity and reduce reliance on traditional diagnostic labels.

Courses are offered in-person at Temple’s Main Campus or in a flexible online format that combines asynchronous learning with required field experiences. The program can be completed part-time and is ideal for working professionals.

Special Education Focus

In this program, you will:

  • Develop instructional strategies for students with mild, moderate and complex learning needs.

  • Learn how to implement inclusive practices, differentiated instruction and behavioral supports.

  • Understand the legal, ethical and cultural foundations of special education.

  • Gain field-based experience with coaching and supervision aligned to Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) certification standards.

Graduates are well-prepared to teach and support students with disabilities in inclusive and specialized PreK–12 settings, and to foster equitable classrooms that promote access, belonging and individualized learning.

    Fieldwork

In addition to state certification exams, students in the Special Education Graduate Certificate program must complete field experiences embedded within their coursework. These placements are designed to provide practical exposure to inclusive teaching practices and support service delivery in K–12 settings. Most school-based assignments can be completed during regular working hours. Students are expected to arrange access to appropriate classroom environments for observation, intervention design, or lesson implementation.

All candidates must complete required clearances and prerequisite coursework prior to beginning any field experience. The program concludes with EDUC 5888 – Supervised Teaching, a mentored practicum that may be completed part-time, depending on the student's professional setting and advisor approval.
